Levels 1 and 2

  • Explore and investigate the responses of plants or animals, including people, to environmental changes in a soil habitat.

  • Social Sciences: Why particular places are important for people eg. Special places in the natural or cultural environment.


  • Social Sciences: How and why people describe places and environments in different ways eg. What place names reveal about environments


  • The Arts (Drama): Establish an imaginary space, such as a forest, island, or cave, as the setting for dramatic play.


  • The Arts (Visual Arts): Talk about objects and images found in their own environment


  • English (Reading and Viewing): Observe signs and symbols used to identify environmental features and discuss the way in which visual signs convey their meaning.


  • English (Writing and Presenting): Collect an item from the natural environment, describe it orally using all the senses, and record observations and personal responses in writing.


  • English (Oral Language): View a wordless text, such as a painting of the environment or kowhaiwhai, interpret what it means and act out a text. 


  • Mathematics and Statistics (Number and Algebra): Find examples of patterns in the natural environment which demonstrate that some patterns continue without end.


  • Mathematics and Statistics (Geometry and Measurement): Explore a variety of shapes and objects found in nature by touching, observing, and talking about them.


  • Mathematics and Statistics (Statistics): Collect objects from the natural environment, sort them into categories, count each category, and display and discuss the results.
