Level 1

  • Share their experiences relating to the living world and group living things according to their special features.

  • Students can share their ideas about how animals could be grouped in different ways according to their observable features.

Level 2

  • Students can discuss differences and similarities in various animals that have been broadly grouped according to their external characteristics.

  • Mathematics and Statistics (Number and Algebra): Develop a number sense through exploring numbers of wings, feet, segments, antennae. 

  • Mathematics and Statistics (Geometry and Measurement): Explore a variety of shapes and objects found in nature by touching, observing, and talking about them.

  • Mathematics and Statistics (Geometry and Measurement): Identify symmetries in the natural world.

  • Mathematics and Statistics (Statistics): Interpret the difference between the smallest and largest values, and explain the meaning of clusters or holes in a data display of animals in their local environment.

  • The Arts (Dance): Move in response to environmental stimuli.

  • The Arts (Drama): Establish an imaginary space, such as a forest, island, or cave, as the setting for dramatic play.

  • Social Sciences: How people’s activities influence places and the environment and are influenced by them eg. The location and use of water sources.

  • English (Writing): Collect an item from the natural environment, describe it orally using all the senses, and record observations and personal responses in writing.
