Integration ideas are from the Ministry of Education

Level 1 

  • Why people belong to groups eg. Kiwi Conservation Club


Level 2

  • How people’s activities influence places and the environment and are influenced by them eg. The location and use of water sources.


Level 3

  • How the ideas and actions of people in the past changes the lives of others eg. Individuals and groups who have worked to preserve the environment (kaitiakitanga)


Level 4

  • Why and how individuals and groups pass on and sustain their culture and heritage eg. The use of songs and dances and written, oral, and visual records about environments.


The Arts (Music)


Level 1

  • Identify contrasting sounds of Papatūānuku and the environment (high and low, fast and slow, loud and soft, long and short).

  • Find different ways of making sounds with sound sources from the environment.

  • Use voices and simple instruments to tell a story about the environment through sound.


Level 3

  • Listen to, discuss, and perform the music of the tangata whenua on environmental issues.


Level 4

  • Draw on environmental issues to make a musical statement eg. a rap, an advertising jingle.


  • Science (Nature of Science): Investigate the impact of some well-known technological innovation or scientific discovery on people and/or the local environment eg. the aerosol can, portable audio systems.
