Integration ideas are from the Ministry of Education

Level 1

  • Students can show that mirrors reflect light and that the light travels in straight lines.

  • Students can discuss their ideas about how shadows form.

  • Students can share their observations and ideas about instances when light is refracted.

  • Students can observe that the colours in a spectrum come from white light. They can talk about their observations.


Level 2

  • Students can explore how mirrors reflect light. They can demonstrate how light travels in straight lines.

  • Students can explore how shadows change in size and intensity.

  • Students can explore the refraction of light and share their observations.

  • Students can explore and describe ways in which white light can be split into the spectrum.

  • Mathematics and Statistics (Number and Algebra): Find examples of patterns in the natural environment which demonstrate that some patterns continue without end.


  • Mathematics and Statistics (Geometry and Measurement): Make and use unconventional instruments, such as a water clock or a sundial, to measure time.


  • Technology: Share ideas about the ways in which familiar technologies affect their lives eg. the use and disposal of plastics
